Ancestors

When Carolyn and Nigel were on tour in Finland some years ago they met a DJ who gave them a plie of old 1920s and '30s recordings of Siberian shamans in action. This is their wonderful and respectful honouring of those originals, arranged and instrumented by Nigel with Carolyn's haunting vocals weaving through the mix. Nigel and Carolyn donate £1 per sale to Survival International, and som now, does Second wave Productions. Kay and I went to Nigel and Carolyn's midwinter blessing concert in a little church on Dartmoor last night. We were blown away, moved and inspired, especially by hearing more of the story around the Ancestors album, and hearing some of those songs "live". We also especially loved the flute songs from Dartmoor Roundhouse, songs played on flutes Nigel has made from local trees. What beauty to hear the sound of our local trees singing, through Nigel's craftmanship and amazing playing. And lastly, the remberance songs for those who have died, on the album Requeim and Carolyn's version of a Sami women's song for the dead, "Wrapping the Bark" from Ice were very good medicine.
